LinkedIn Portrait Tips From Our Boca Raton Photo Studio.

How long did it take you to choose your professional portrait on LinkedIn?  Most likely, this important decision was done in a half-second as you were trying to get through finishing your profile. If you could use a few LinkedIn portrait tips, please read on. Usually, business portraits are an afterthought, which explains these common LinkedIn portrait scenarios.

  1.  The bank manager who uploaded their cell phone shot from last week’s happy hour (complete with red face and eyes)
  2. Your doctor who’s wearing his golf clothes or who’s picture is so old, it looks like they’re still in medical school
  3. A real estate agent with ex-spouse cut out (but you can still see an unidentified arm around their shoulder)

Meanwhile, this portrait (avatar, thumbnail, picture or whatever you want to call it) is probably of equal importance to your education, employment history and all of the other things that people use to judge you on LinkedIn. Some of our examples can be seen at foreverstudios.com

So, what does Forever Studios know about LinkedIn portraits?
  1. You’re seven times more likely to be viewed if you have a photo on your profile.  There are no statistics on the “good versus bad” LinkedIn portrait but we’re willing to bet that business people gravitate towards someone they see as competent and trustworthy.
  2. Brighter is better. Your LinkedIn avatar is usually shown around the size of a postage stamp. When you take the average portrait and shrink it down, it becomes muddy and dark (and unless you’re in a muddy and dark business, it doesn’t look so good).
  3. Keep it simple. Simple works for the same reason brighter works. These shots are so small that any backgrounds and extra “stuff” in the shot will only compete with your competent and trustworthy expression.
  4. Be square. You can take a that nice full-length shot but it’ll end up either cropped, shrunk, squeezed or otherwise squashed into the square LinkedIn format. So why not start with an image that can easily be cropped as a square?
